This comprehensive article traces PCIe's journey from its origins as a replacement for parallel PCI through its maturation and current state-of-the-art implementations. The technology has continuously adapted to meet the growing demands of diverse applications, from data centers and artificial intelligence to automotive systems and industrial automation. Each generation has significantly improved bandwidth, signal integrity, power efficiency, and error management while maintaining backward compatibility and introducing innovative features.
